Gli Atleti considerati di Elite negli ultimi dieci anni hanno guadagnato cifre nettamente superiori alla media grazie ai sempre più ricchi contratti televisivi. A rompere gli indugi tra i contratti dei 100 professionisti più pagati al mondo sono i 25 milioni di dollari di quest’anno, paragonati ai 17.3 milioni degli ultimi cinque anni.
È la rivista Forbes* a pubblicare i guadagni leader nel mondo sportivo nelle ultime tre decadi, e solo sette atleti sono rimasti al top dal 1990 (Tiger Woods mantiene il record di 12 primi posti in classifica generale). È il calciatore icona mondiale Lionel Messi che aggiunge il suo nome all’appello per l’ottava volta quest’anno e a seguire, il suo rivale di sempre Cristiano Ronaldo.
Le prime 100 posizioni comprendono dieci sports e includono atleti di ben 25 paesi diversi. I 4 miliardi di dollari suddivisi in premi, stipendi e sponsorizzazioni tra giugno 2018 e giugno 2019 sono cresciuti del 5% nell’ultimo anno, momento storico in cui Floyd Mayweather, pugile di livello internazionale tra i primi al mondo, raggiunse il primo posto con un patrimonio di 285 milioni di dollari.
Per quanto concerne i contratti della NFL (National Football League, la maggiore lega professionistica nordamericana di Football americano), gli atleti top hanno portato ad un incremento sostanziale del business, sottoscrivendo bonus e aumentando il numero di spettatori sui campi da gioco grazie soprattutto a ricchi stipendi e alla loro apparizione nelle classifica delle prime cento posizioni dei paperoni dello sport. Contratti di rilievo che si sono uniti ai 330 milioni di dollari del baseball spesi dai Philadelphia Phillies nel 2019.
Citando il basket, tra gli sport più seguiti al mondo, possiamo affermare che 35 giocatori sono stati all’altezza della situazione, accumulando guadagni pari a 1.3 miliardi di dollari; in questo senso il credito del mondo della NBA è salito vertiginosamente raddoppiando il monte ingaggi negli ultimi 5 anni. Se da una parte più della metà delle prime 100 fonti redditizie provengono dall’NBA e dall’NFL, ponendo gli americani in vantaggio nel computo totale, dall’altra la ricchezza delle Stars internazionali del calcio e del tennis proviene principalmente dai paesi al di fuori degli Stati Uniti. Da quando Tiger Woods, golfista più famoso di tutti I tempi, è salito alla ribalta negli anni 2000, gli incassi sportivi si sono regolarmente attestati sopra i 100 milioni di dollari ogni anno, anche se il cambiamento maggiore è dovuto ad una crescita e ad un nuovo metodo di erogazione degli stipendi che per i dieci atleti più pagati di sempre, è cresciuto del 150% in 15 anni.
L’unica atleta femminile presente è la tennista Serena Williams, classificatasi al 63° posto con 29,2 milioni, compresi 25 milioni arrivati fuori dal campo. È anche l’unica donna ad entrare tra i primi 100 per la seconda volta in tre anni. Ha 23 titoli del Grande Slam vinti in carriera e cerca il 24esimo per diventare la più vincente di sempre. Nel frattempo ha diversificato i suoi interessi cogliendo diverse opportunità: l’origine della sua fortuna, stimata in 225 milioni di dollari, è frutto sì di montepremi di tornei vinti e sponsorizzazioni sportive, ma la maggior parte proviene dalla sua capacità gestionale e dal suo brand. Negli ultimi 5 anni ha investito in 34 startup e recentemente ha annunciato l’avvio della sua compagnia, Serena Ventures, che farà compagne proprie a sostegno di altri.
